Richard Harris Awards

The Richard Harris Awards are funded by a grant from the Harris family.  Harris left a notable legacy as a founding member and past president of the New Mexico Book Association, author of many books, a consummate book man, and a mentor to publishers. The Harris Award is presented annually to a book whose outstanding excellence in every measure, in authorship, editorial preparation, design, and influence, is deemed worthy of high honor and recognition.

Award Winners 

2013   A Garlic Testament  (Stanley Crawford)
  • From his New Mexico mountain home, award-winning author Stanley Crawford writes about growing garlic and selling it. "To dream a garden and then to plant it is an act of independence and even defiance to the greater world."--Stan Crawford 
​2014   Kiva, Cross, and Crown  (John Kessell)  
  • A meticulous and engaging history of one of the largest and most powerful Pueblos. Richly illustrated with drawings from the sixteenth century to the nineteenth.
2015   The Hi Lo Country  (Max Evans)  
  • Now a major motion picture from Gramercy Pictures starring Woody Harrelson, Billy Crudup, and Patricia Arquette. They were two cowboys out of the New Mexico dust. Cowpunchers and manpunchers, they hit hard, lived raw, and rode the beautiful Hi-Lo country as best friends and comrades. Until one night, when they fell in love with the same woman--a beautiful, irresistible, married woman.
2016   Bless Me, Ultima  (Rudolfo Anaya)  
  • Chronicles the story of an alienated New Mexico boy who seeks an answer to his questions about life in his relationship with Ultima, a magical heale
​​2017   Enchantment and Exploitation  (William deBuys)
  • This book is a complete account of the closely linked natural and human history of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains of northern New Mexico, a region unique in its rich combination of ecological and cultural diversity.  
2018   The Milagro Beanfield War  (John Nichols)
  • The tale of Milagro's rising is wildly comic and lovingly tender, a vivid portrayal of a town that, half-stumbling and partly prodded, gropes its way toward its own stubborn salvation.  
2019   The House at Otowi Bridge  (Peggy Pond Church)  
  • This is the story of Edith Warner, who lived for more than twenty years as a neighbor to the Indians of San Ildefonso Pueblo, near Los Alamos, New Mexico.
2020   Ladies of the Canyons  (Lesley Poling-Kempes) 
  • The true story of remarkable women who left the security and comforts of genteel Victorian society and journeyed to the American Southwest in search of a wider view of themselves and their world.
2021   Last of the Menu Girls  (Denise Chávez) ​
  • A collection of seven interrelated short stories--lively narrations containing elements of naturalism, surrealism and impressionism.Stories include "The Last of the Menu Girls, "Willow Game," "Shooting Stars, "Evening in Paris," "The Closet," "Space is a Solid," and "Compadre"
2022   Ceremony  (Leslie Marmon Silko)
  • Ceremony is a complex and multilayered work that explores themes of identity, alienation, and the power of storytelling. It is considered a classic of Native American literature and has been widely studied and taught. 
2023   Sáanii Dahataał, The Women are Singing (Luci Tapahanso)
  • In this cycle of poetry and stories, Navajo writer Luci Tapahonso shares memories of her home in Shiprock, New Mexico, and of the places and people there.
2024   So Far From God (Ana Castillo)
  • Set in a town in New Mexico called Tome and revolves around the lives of Sofia and her four daughters: Esperanza, Fe, Caridad, and La Loca. The novel addresses themes such as rebellion, spirituality and gender.
