Poet, shaman, drummer, publisher, friend....however you knew him, Stewart has deeply touched some of us with his generosity. Founder and publisher of Mercury Heartlink Publishing, Stewart was a central figure in the Southwestern poetry scene for three decades. He would want us to carry on and put it forward!
The photo above is Stewart “preaching poetry on the tracks,” with arms outstretched, eyes lifted, to a crowd on the platform in Bernalillo, NM, January 2015. Stewart organized the writing excursion on the Rail Runner, where we took a group of poets to Santa Fe to meet at op.cit. books (when it was located right off the tracks) for a poetry reading.

I was saddened to hear of Stewart's death. I was his first girlfriend when he was 19. Lost track of him for decades but was able to talk to him a few years ago and catch up a little. It was not at all surprising that he'd become poet. He always was.
