![]() The New Mexico Book Association is thrilled to announce that Ana Castillo is the recipient of the 2024 Richard Harris Award for her book So Far From God and her significant contributions to literature and her deep connection to the Southwest. The award was presented at the Association’s Winter Fiesta at The Club at Las Campanas in Santa Fe on January 18th. Ana Castillo is a renowned Chicana writer, poet, and essayist. She is widely recognized for her contributions to Chicana/o literature and her exploration of themes such as identity, feminism, social justice, and spirituality. So Far From God is considered a seminal work in Chicana/o literature, telling the story of the Esperanza family, four sisters living in a small, isolated town in New Mexico. The book delves into the intricate relationships between the family’s mother and four sisters, examines traditional gender roles and experiences of women in a patriarchal society, as well as explores the intersection of Catholicism and indigenous spirituality. “The New Mexico Book Association is proud to recognize Ana Castillo for her literary achievements and her impact on our community,” said Anna Sochocky, NMBA President. “So Far From God is a powerful and moving work that has resonated with readers for decades. We are honored to present her with this award.” The Richard Harris Award is presented annually to a book whose outstanding excellence—in authorship, editorial preparation, design, and production—makes it a lasting contribution to the literature of New Mexico or the Southwest. The award is named in honor of Richard Harris, a founding member of the New Mexico Book Association, an author of many highly regarded books, and a mentor to publishers.

Shaping Destiny: Election Season, Before, During and After is our response to the realities of the most important and frightening election of our lives, whether we are old or young.
In this issue we present poetry, prose, and graphics that investigate present conditions, address the election itself, and explore how we must live afterwards. Our intention with Shaping Destiny was to present links between current events and matters of social justice, the earth, and the spirit arising from each. The work is intended to provide direction and places to find comfort, as well as to explain, strengthen and prepare. It addresses major issues and rights gained and taken away, including women’s rights, civil rights, ecological issues, and many others—some rights that we still have, and others we have lost already. Each of the Presidential candidates in this election promises to address these issues, but in ways that are starkly different. One path stands for overtly violent organizing to take us back perhaps to the 1920s, as in the identification of Christian Nationalism with white supremacy. The other path stands for regaining rights and providing an economy that will very likely allow a decent life. International issues also confront both candidates. These are sharpest about the necessity of a cease fire for Gaza and now for Lebanon. Ukraine’s struggle for identity and clear independence continues. It's Your Body: The Young Woman's Guide to Empowered Sexual Health, was recently published by WW Norton. It’s Your Body is an unbiased resource guide with clear information about all the birth control methods available , consent, STIs, sexual wellness, and an in-depth look at pregnancy options including how to access them in the post-Roe landscape. It contains wisdom and guidance from her 26 years of experience in the field. When Roe vs Wade was overturned two years ago, Dena asked herself what she could do to help the people most vulnerable to the consequences of unintended pregnancy- teenagers and young adults. They currently face abortion bans and care deserts, fake clinics, and misinformation circulating on the web- all barriers to reproductive freedom. What can one midwife/writer do? Her answer is this book- which will help teenagers and young women make their own decisions about their bodies, their fertility, and their lives.
