You are invited to enter the seventh annual New Mexico Book Association (NMBA) Southwest Book Design and Production Awards Competition! The awards recognize creativity and quality in book design and distinction in production. They help raise the standards of excellence in book design and publishing throughout the Southwest.
To be eligible, a title:
• Must have a 2018-2020 copyright and ISBN
• May be a revised edition with a new ISBN, new cover, and revised or additional text
• The book must be published in Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Utah, or Texas, OR the author is living in the Southwest, OR the subject matter is related to the Southwest region.

Mari Angulo has been studying for a master’s degree in Madrid, Spain, since September 2019 and has remained there throughout the nationwide COVID-19 lockdown. Mari spoke with Richard Eeds on Talk KTRC just over a week ago about her experience that started with a visit to South Korea lasting only three days due to the outbreak in February. The interview took place just as the Spanish government began easing the country’s strict confinement regulations. Mari shared her life during Madrid’s lockdown as well as what she’s doing remotely with the New Mexico Book Association and other New Mexico clients as they pivot into new directions.

As we were all trying to adjust to the new regulations of social distancing, NMBA is taking steps to ensure that members can stay connected. We are continuing our monthly luncheon meetings virtually! After a couple of “test meetings” where we shared tips and tricks and helped members get familiar with Zoom, we were ready for the real deal. April 17, 2020, marked NMBA’s first virtual luncheon meeting! The meeting was filled with familiar faces, meeting regulars, and many new faces as well. The online format gave out-of-state (and out-of-Santa Fe) members the opportunity to finally participate and meet their fellow members, something that isn’t possible for them during our regular physical meetings.
President Jared Gann opened up the meeting by giving a brief introduction and then invited Richard Polese and Shirley Melis to share some cherished memories of their friend, and longtime NMBA member, Maxine Davenport. As everyone enjoyed their lunches at home, we went around the (virtual) room and had members introduce themselves and share what they have been working on. At the peak of the meeting, there were over 25 members participating and enjoying each other’s company. If you are interested in participating in the next virtual meeting, click here.

Maxine Neely Davenport passed from us on February 14 following a traffic incident. She was a bright and engaging woman of 91 years.
Maxine served as director of our NMBA Homegrown Authors Table at Santa Fe Farmers Market starting in 2013. She was wonderfully devoted in that post for seven very full years, and was still going strong for us at the time of her death.
She practiced family law in Colorado Springs and was an avid outdoors woman. Maxine had climbed twenty-six 14,000-foot mountains before coming to Santa Fe to write and publish. On her arrival she began writing and publishing novels, including Saturday Matinee, Rebel on Horseback, Love Is a Legal Affair, and Murder Times Two.
Maxine received the NMBA Book-in-Hand Award for her work bringing people to buy and read books from New Mexico. She is survived by three children: Marian, Mark, and Mitch, plus seven grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and her daughter-in-law Cristal in Santa Fe.
One NMBA member urged our author’s table now carry her name: The Maxine Davenport Homegrown Authors Table. She so richly deserves the honor!

Author and member of the New Mexico Book Association, Janet Brennan, has chosen to go public with her breast cancer. She has said, “Anyone who knows me knows that my life is an open book. If it helps just one other woman to stay current with their mammograms and self examinations, it is worth it. It is very important to understand that we are never in this life alone. There is always a very deep source of energy within us that propels us to a greater purpose.”
Janet wanted to share the following quote:
“As the beautiful birds of the sky do not fly but for the stretch of their wings and carry of the wind. Like the fish in the streams, we are borne for a greater purpose, for we are carried by water. As the fires that burn, we are made whole as the Phoenix rises from the ashes.”

NMBA’s vice president, Sandi Wright, gave a brief presentation on tips and tricks for creating illustrations. Sandi shared some of her knowledge about writing and illustrating her own book. Sandi believes that everyone has the ability to draw. She demonstrated some exercises from Betty Edwards’ book, Drawing from the Right Side of the Brain, by having the group make a fist with their hand and trace it. The idea behind it being that once the words “draw a fist” are processed by the brain, it activates the left side of the brain instead of the right. The right side of the brain is said to be associated with creativity and art, so an illustrator wants to work on awakening the right side while they are creating. Tracing the fist, or any other object, allows the right side of the brain to remain active.
Another helpful tip that Sandi shared was that when illustrating characters or objects, it can be very useful to mold a three-dimensional figure of the object you are attempting to draw so it can be used as a reference.
The group enjoyed the hands-on presentation, and Sandi may hold a workshop on illustration in the future.

Our annual Winter Fiesta party was scheduled for Thursday, January 16, but due to the snowstorm that hit Santa Fe, we made the decision to cancel and reschedule for another evening. A new date has been confirmed with the Bourbon Grill. The Winter Fiesta will be held January 30, from 5:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Bourbon Grill at El Gancho, if the weather permits. A full dinner will be served, along with vegetarian and vegan options. Winners for the Book in Hand Award and Harris Award will be announced, and there will be live entertainment from The Harmonizers. Tickets are $30 per person, and nonmembers and guests are welcome!
