New Mexico Book Association (NMBA) is the only statewide nonprofit serving all book professionals. We are passionate book people who have come together through our common interests to preserve, protect, and promote the book in all its forms. Our members include book creators, writers, editors, publishers, illustrators, librarians, booksellers, book designers, typesetters, printers, literacy advocates, agents, reviewers, and avid readers.

NMBA MEMBERS AND FRIENDS filled the house at Bourbon Grill for January’s Winter Fiesta. Paula Lozar led the ceremonies, highlighted by presentation of our Richard Harris Award to Enchantment and Exploitation, an exceptional and enduring book in every regard. Accepting the Award were the University of New Mexico Press Director John W. Byram and the book’s celebrated author William deBuys. Through our Harris Fund and the generosity of UNM Press we select deserving libraries to receive copies of the book at no cost.

Special thanks to our Co-Sponsors Collected Works and Casa de Snapdragon, and co-hosts International Women’s Writing Guild (IWWG), New Mexico Book Coop, Society of the Muse of the Southwest (SOMOS), and all who make it great when book people come together!

Founded in 1994, NMBA has been recognized as one of the country’s most active book associations. Our many services include professional development workshops, our Libro newsletter, monthly networking luncheons, New Mexico’s Book World (a resource guide to the NM book community), a monthly online events calendar, opportunities to show and sell books at major book festivals and trade shows, and more. Please explore this site to see all that we do!

Upcoming Events and Programs

Sue Boggio and Mare Pearl will give an in-depth collaborative writing fiction workshop on May 23 from 6-8 PM at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Santa Fe.  They will show how two or more writers can contribute to one book and make it seamless.  Ideas come together to form an exciting and warm story with characters that leap from the page and into your heart.

Sue Boggio and Mare Pearl grew up together as best friends.  Sue went on to attend nursing school in Pediatrics and Child Psychiatry.  Mare studied musical theater in New York City.  Both Sue and Mare credit their work at the UNM Children and Adolescent Psychiatric Center as invaluable instruction in their approach to characterization in fiction writing.  They formed a creative collaboration in the mid 1990s for their first novel, Sunlight and Shadow which was published by Penguin in 2004.  In 2012, their second novel, A Growing Season, was published by the University of New Mexico Press along with a new edition which was awarded finalist in the Zia Award from the New Mexico Press Women and then they went on to win the Tony Hillerman Award for best fiction.  Their third novel in the series, Long Night Moon, was released by UNM Press in March, 2017.

Sue Boggio and Mare Pearl have presented  collaborative fiction writing workshops at Southwest Writers, UNM Writers Conference. Tony Hillerman Writers Conference and Women Writing the West Conference.

The cost is $25 for NMBA members and $30 for non-members. To reserve your spot, email admin@nmbook.org
